Tutor: Ian Burgess or Kari Perekupka What to expect: In your 3 hour taster class you will be introduced to preparing the clay with a short demonstration followed by an hour of hand building, making a mug or something similar, possibly a kitchen utensils jar. Once we have completed this then the class will move on to an hour and a quarter throwing on the wheel, again starting by prepping the clay, learning to centre the clay on the wheel and then learning how to pull make a small bowl/dish. 15 to 20 minutes before the end of the class the group will then have a clean down of both the wheels and hand building area. People will then choose a glaze that they would like their piece fired in. The pieces will be left at London clay to dry out ready for a bisque firing followed by a glaze firing. This normally takes around 3 weeks. Once the pieces are ready to collect London Clay will let you know your piece/pieces are ready to be picked up and you will have 1 week from notification to pick your work up. Unfortunately any work not picked up will be disposed of due to the required space needed. FAQs * We will provide aprons (not split leg) but do bring your own if you prefer. * It’s always good to have an idea of what you’d like to make, but we can also help and guide you with this. Sometimes it’s worth making a rough sketch of what you might like to make. We can help guide you on how to go about making it, but be aware, mainly for the day classes, if this is a complicated form you may not have the time to create this in one class. * It is advised to remove long necklaces and all hand jewellery when working with clay. * Long finger nails and false nails don’t work well with throwing or hand building. * Hair will need to be tied back where applicable for safety reasons. * Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. * Food is not permitted to be consumed in the studio due to contamination, but do feel free to eat outside in our seating area. * NB: Not all pieces will be fired. Some pieces may be too thick to fire due to their potential explosion in the kiln. This will be left to the discretion of the kiln technician. * Pieces not picked up within the given time frame will be removed due to limited studio space. * We have a bathroom with wheelchair access.
