Course Details

Week 1: The class will be shown how to wedge, preparing their clay ready to work with followed by a hand building demo of both coil building and slab building. The class will then be split into 2 groups. One group will go onto the wheels where the tutor will give a demo of how to centre, cone and lift. The hand building team will continue to hand build, with the tutor on hand at all times to guide through the process. For 15 to 20 minutes at the end of each class everyone will clean down ready for the next session. Week 2: Will be the continuation of week one with the same groups doing the same thing. Week 3: The groups will be swapped, so the first hand builders will go onto the wheels and be reminded of how to prepare the clay, followed by a demo on the wheel. The tutor will again be on hand to remind the hand builders of how to slab and coil build. Week 4: Will be a continuation of week 3. Weeks 5 and 6: Both groups will be shown the various techniques of decorating and carving their pieces, followed by a combination of under glazing and glazing their pieces ready for firing. We will then fire the pieces once they are bone dry. We will let you know when they can be picked up, generally around 2 to 3 weeks later. FAQs * We will provide aprons (not split leg) but do bring your own if you prefer. * It’s always good to have an idea of what you’d like to make, but we can also help and guide you with this. Sometimes it’s worth making a rough sketch of what you might like to make. We can help guide you on how to go about making it, but be aware, mainly for the day classes, if this is a complicated form you may not have the time to create this in one class. * It is advised to remove long necklaces and all hand jewellery when working with clay. * Long finger nails and false nails don’t work well with throwing or hand building. * Hair will need to be tied back where applicable for safety reasons. * Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. * Food is not permitted to be consumed in the studio due to contamination, but do feel free to eat outside in our seating area. * NB: Not all pieces will be fired. Some pieces may be too thick to fire due to their potential explosion in the kiln. This will be left to the discretion of the kiln technician. * Pieces not picked up within the given time frame will be removed due to limited studio space. * We have a bathroom with wheelchair access.
