Course Details

6 Week Throwing Course: this course is for beginner and intermediate potters who have had some previous experience on a wheel. What to expect: (This will vary depending on the development on each individual. The small group of 6 allows the tutor to spend plenty of time with each person and address their individual needs throughout the course.) Week 1 & 2: Starting with a clay weight of 500g, we will focus on centering and coning, along with the opening and lifting of the walls, with the objective of developing technique and muscle memory. Weeks 3 & 4: We will start creating forms from cylinders. These can be functional or decorative pieces but everybody will be encouraged to push not only the clay's boundaries but also their own. We will also start to use larger weights of clay and observe the difference in technique required. Week 5&6: Each person will get to choose 6 pieces of their best work to spend week 5 trimming and refining on the wheel, and of course decorating ready for the studio to bisque fire. Once everything has been bisque fired the group will then spend week 6 putting the final touches to their pieces, which may require a little sanding before glazing. The studio will glaze your pieces ready for you to pick up up to 3 weeks after the course has finished (depending on kiln scheduling) - we will inform you as soon as they're ready. FAQs * We will provide aprons (not split leg) but do bring your own if you prefer. * It’s always good to have an idea of what you’d like to make, but we can also help and guide you with this. Sometimes it’s worth making a rough sketch of what you might like to make. We can help guide you on how to go about making it. * It is advised to remove long necklaces and all hand jewellery when working with clay. * Long finger nails and false nails don’t work well with throwing or hand building. * Hair will need to be tied back where applicable for safety reasons. * Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. * Food is not permitted to be consumed in the studio due to contamination, but do feel free to eat outside in our seating area. * NB: Not all pieces will be fired. Some pieces may be too thick to fire due to their potential explosion in the kiln. This will be left to the discretion of the kiln technician. * Pieces not picked up within the given time frame will be removed due to limited studio space. * We have a bathroom with wheelchair access.
